Social and educational action "Unitary state - common history"

Social and educational action "Unitary state - common history" (August 2007) is dedicated to the Day of Independence of Ukraine, it is taking place under the supervision of Ukrainian Institute of the national memory (acting Head of the institute, academician of NAS of Ukraine, professor Igor Yukhnovskyy) and is organized by TV channel "1 + 1" (General director of the channel Yuriy Morozov) and "Telecon" studio (art director of the studio Igor Kobrin). Informational sponsor - "Telecritica" (head - Natalia Ligachova).

The main part of this action is a premiere of the documentary series "Sobor on the Blood" about the history of Ukrainian national liberation movement of the first half of twentieth century.

In December, 1991 Ukraine became an independent state. However the young state, which has been held down with economical difficulties and political fights, could not give sufficient attention to learning its own history. The majority of usual citizens of Ukraine even today know almost nothing about Ukrainian military organization (UMO), Union of liberation of Ukraine (ULU), Organization of Ukrainian nationalists (OUN), Ukrainian Main Liberation Council (UMLC), Ukrainian Rebellious Army (URA), and so any discussion around this theme remains at a level of stereotypes of the Soviet epoch. The series "Sobor on the Blood" for the first time comprehensively and fairly will tell viewer about the struggle for unity and independence of our country for the period from 1919 to 1949. This struggle is considered in the series as a part of the all-European history. In fact Konovalets and Melnyk, Bandera and Sheptitsky, Borovets and Shukhevych lived and acted in difficult conditions of the grandiose geo-political conflict between Hitlerite Reich, Stalin Empire and western democracies. Such approach allows understanding and comprehending the reasons of events and acts in common to all mankind sense, but not from one or another with stereotypes flushed point of view. The citizens have the right to any opinion about the history of own country, but first of all we should now it. Absurd existence of several different histories of single country resulted from the absence of information. A man should know, in order to understand, and understand, in order to go to consensus. That is the main sense of the action "Unitary state - common history".

For the first time on Ukrainian TV the nationwide TV channel "1 + 1" and regional TV broadcasters throughout Ukraine will broadcast "Sobor on the Blood". The series will be distributed on DVD as well. We think that such global coverage of the complicated and ambiguous topic will result in its serious discussion in society and will be the next step of Ukraine to democracy.
